What is a Prophet?
A true prophet is a messenger of God, delivering His words—not their own—to individuals or nations. Their purpose is to pierce hearts, lead others to repentance, and glorify God.
Signs of a True Prophet of God:
1. Called by God, not man – They are chosen and led by the Spirit of God (Numbers 12:6).
2. Reluctant to speak for God – They don’t seek attention or personal gain.
3. Their words align with Scripture – Everything they say can be tested against the Word of God (1 John 4:1).
4. Their messages bring edification, correction, and hope – They comfort, exhort, and uplift, always pointing people to repentance and truth.
5. They exalt Jesus, not themselves – Their mission is to glorify God and declare the full gospel of Jesus Christ.
6. They discern truth from error – They expose deception and have a strong ability to judge between spirits (1 Corinthians 12:10).
7. They bear good fruit – Their lives reflect holiness, humility, and obedience to God (Matthew 7:16).
8. Their prophecies come to pass – What they declare in the name of God is fulfilled (Deuteronomy 18:22).
9. They tell the truth, even when it hurts – They are bold, often rejected, and willing to suffer for standing firm in God’s truth.
10. They don’t chase status, fame, or wealth – True prophets are often unpopular, hold no official title, and may live as outsiders.
Signs of a False Prophet:

1. Called by man, not God – They promote themselves and operate from their flesh.
2. Eager to speak for God – They love the spotlight and attention.
3. Tell people what they want to hear – Their words tickle ears rather than convict hearts (2 Timothy 4:3).
4. Deny the truth of Jesus – They distort, minimize, or outright reject the gospel.
5. Shift the focus away from Christ – They exalt themselves, their brand, or their “ministry” over God.
6. Compromise on Scripture – They twist, add, or remove parts of God’s Word to fit their own agenda.
7. Hinder deep relationship with God – Instead of leading people into deeper intimacy with Jesus, they keep them dependent on themselves.
8. Obsessed with prosperity and money – Their messages focus on material gain, worldly success, and financial “blessings.”
9. Popular, comfortable, and unchallenged – False prophets often gain influence, hold powerful positions, and avoid persecution.
10. Do not call people to repentance – They avoid speaking about sin, righteousness, or the need for change.
11. Their words fail to come to pass – Their “prophecies” are filled with empty promises that never manifest.
12. They demand money – They insist on seeds, offerings, or donations before or after delivering a “word from the Lord.”
13. They resist correction – They refuse to be held accountable and react defensively when challenged.
14. They repeat the same messages over and over – They lack fresh revelation from God and recycle the same words.
🚨 If they tell you that you must sow a financial seed to “activate” a word from the Lord — RUN!
🚨 If they prompt you to pay by sending you their CashApp, PayPal, Zelle, or Venmo to talk to you (and God hasn’t moved your heart to give)—RUN! 🏃🏾♀️
Be Discerning—Deception is at an ALL-TIME High!
The Bible warns that false prophets will rise to deceive many (Matthew 24:11). Don’t be fooled. Test every spirit. Compare every word against Scripture. Stay close to Jesus.
Are You Called as a Prophet?
If you recognize the marks of a true prophet in your life, HOSANNA! 🙌🏾 God has entrusted you with an extraordinary gift and responsibility to His Church. Walk humbly, speak boldly, and always point people back to Christ!
Say this prayer with me 🙏🏾:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your truth that guides and protects me. In these days of great deception, give me discernment to recognize true messengers from those who speak falsely in Your name. Let my heart be anchored in Your Word, so that I may test every spirit and follow only those who truly glorify Jesus.
Guard me from being misled by smooth words, false promises, or teachings that do not align with Scripture. Help me to be humble, teachable, and Spirit-led, walking in the wisdom that comes from You alone.
Raise up true prophets who boldly proclaim Your truth, and remove every voice that seeks to deceive Your people. Let my ears be tuned to the voice of the Good Shepherd and my heart remain steadfast in Your will, not man’s.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
