Proverbs 31 Unveiled: A Prophecy for Both Men and Women šŸ‘°šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļøšŸ’šŸ¤µšŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤

I was reading through Proverbs and something caught my attention—the introduction to Proverbs 31: ā€œThe words of King Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught himā€ (Proverbs 31:1).

The WHAT?! 🤨

That word prophecy stood out to me. I couldn’t help but wonder: what exactly does that mean? As many times as I’ve read this scripture, I realized I’d been glossing over that very important detail. So, I started digging.

If Proverbs 31 is a prophecy about godly women, what does this mean for the men who choose them?

King Lemuel’s mother was talking to him after all…

I then realized that if God has spoken about the type of woman He is raising up, He is also giving guidance to men on the standard they need to meet when choosing their spouses.

So, What Exactly Is a Prophecy?

In the Bible, a prophecy is a message inspired by God. It’s not always about predicting the future—sometimes it’s about revealing God’s will, purpose, or calling people to live according to His ways.

Prophecy can take two main forms:

Foretelling: Predicting something that will happen, like the prophecies about Jesus’ birth in the Old Testament.

Forth-telling: Speaking God’s truth to correct, encourage, or guide people in the present moment.

Prophecy isn’t just about foreseeing the future; it’s about revealing God’s heart and intentions for His people. It’s a divine message meant to shape how we live, what we value, and how we understand God’s purpose for our lives.

At first glance, Proverbs 31 might seem like a checklist for the ideal woman—But if we take that opening line seriously—that this is a prophecy—then it changes how we understand the whole chapter. It’s not just practical advice; it’s a God-inspired vision of what a woman who fears the Lord and lives by the fruits of the spirit truly looks like.

This matters to God because:

1. It Is A Vision of Godly Womanhood

Proverbs 31 isn’t just a list of things women should do. It’s a divinely inspired vision of what God desires for women who follow Him. This woman isn’t perfect because she checks all the boxes—she’s praiseworthy because her heart is rooted in the fear of the Lord. Her strength, wisdom, and generosity are the fruit of a life lived in close relationship with God.

If you’re a woman reading this and you’ve ever felt intimidated by the Proverbs 31 woman, take heart. This isn’t about striving for perfection; it’s about growing into the woman God designed you to be.

The Proverbs 31 woman is showing us a real-life example of what it looks like to live out the fruits of the Spirit in our everyday lives.

In Galatians 5:22–23, Paul talks about these fruits—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. When we take a closer look at the Proverbs 31 woman, we can see that she embodies each of these qualities. Her life wasn’t perfect, but it was fully surrendered to God and led by His Spirit. Her story is a reminder that these fruits are possible for all of us, not because of our own strength but because of what God can do in us when we let Him lead.

2. It Is A Prophetic Call for Men

If Proverbs 31 is a vision of what a godly woman looks like, what does that mean for the men who choose them? The book of Proverbs doesn’t just offer wisdom for women—it’s filled with guidance for men too. Just as God calls women to aspire to the virtues of the Proverbs 31 woman, He also calls men to seek, appreciate, and honor such women. Moreover, men are also called to embody the fruits of the Spirit in their own lives, reflecting Christ’s character in how they lead, love, and serve.

Proverbs 31:10 asks, ā€œWho can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.ā€ This question suggests that a godly woman is rare and valuable—not someone a man stumbles upon carelessly. Recognizing her worth means choosing character over beauty and substance over superficiality.

A man who desires a Proverbs 31 woman must have discernment. He can’t be led by lust, pride, or worldly values but by wisdom and godly vision.

3. A Man Must Be Worthy of a Proverbs 31 Woman

Proverbs 31:23 says, ā€œHer husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land.ā€

This isn’t just a random detail. It shows that a Proverbs 31 woman isn’t just any man’s wife—her husband is a man of honor, influence, and leadership.

If a righteous woman requires a righteous man to be equally yoked, then a man who desires a Proverbs 31 wife must strive to be a Proverbs 1–30 man who:

• Seeks Wisdom and Fears the Lord

Proverbs 1:7: ā€œThe fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.ā€

• Walks in Integrity

Proverbs 10:9: ā€œWhoever walks in integrity walks securely.ā€

• Exercises Self-Control

Proverbs 25:28: ā€œLike a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.ā€

• Fears the Lord Above All

Proverbs 14:26: ā€œWhoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress.ā€

4. It Instructs A Man How To Choose His Spouse

Choosing a spouse is one of the most significant decisions a man will ever make, and it holds great importance to God because marriage reflects the relationship between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:25–32).

Look Beyond Outward Beauty

Proverbs 31:30 says, ā€œCharm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.ā€

God calls men to look beyond outward beauty when choosing a wife because true beauty is found in a woman’s character and her reverence for the Lord. Physical beauty fades, but a woman who fears God has a beauty that grows deeper with time. Her faith, wisdom, and integrity are what make her special and capable of building a strong, godly home.

Seek a Wife Who Brings Favor from the Lord

Proverbs 18:22 says, ā€œHe who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lordā€

Choosing a godly wife is not just a personal blessing but a sign of God’s favor. A wife who loves the Lord brings spiritual enrichment and stability to a marriage, helping her husband grow closer to God. Her faithfulness, wisdom, and partnership in prayer invite God’s blessings into their home. This favor is a reflection of God’s desire to see marriages thrive spiritually and to accomplish His purposes through them.

Choose a Woman Who Will Build, Not Tear Down

Proverbs 14:1 reminds us that ā€œEvery wise woman builds her house, but the foolish one tears it down with her own hands.ā€

God values a wife who builds up her home through encouragement, wisdom, and love. A woman who uses her words and actions to edify her family creates an atmosphere of peace and growth. Her ability to manage her household with wisdom and kindness reflects God’s heart for unity and strength in the family. This kind of partnership is essential for fulfilling God’s purpose for marriage—demonstrating His love, raising godly offspring, and building a legacy of faith.

Love Her as Christ Loves the Church

Ephesians 5:25 calls husbands to ā€œlove your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.ā€

God’s command for husbands to love their wives as Christ loves the Church sets the standard for sacrificial, unconditional love. This kind of love is not based on convenience or feelings but on a commitment to serve, protect, and uplift. A husband’s love should mirror Christ’s love—selfless, patient, and willing to sacrifice for his wife’s well-being. This reflects the heart of God for His people and transforms marriage into a living testimony of the Gospel.

So you see, Proverbs 31 isn’t just a prophecy for women—it’s also a challenge to men. It speaks directly to the kind of men who will marry these women. The real question for men isn’t just, ā€œWill I find a Proverbs 31 wife?ā€ but rather, ā€œAm I becoming the kind of man who deserves her?ā€

A godly marriage isn’t just about finding the right person—it’s about BECOMING THE RIGHT PERSON!

A lot of people see Proverbs 31:10–31 as for women, but it’s SO MUCH MORE than just that. The chapter begins with the phrase: ā€œThe words of King Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.ā€ —this reveals that the Proverbs 31 woman isn’t just a set of ideals to strive for—she is a divine revelation from God and foreshadowing of the Bride of Christ.

The testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy!

Yes —This scripture also foreshadows the Church as the Bride of Christ!

Her husband is known at the gates, reflecting how Christ is exalted among His people.

She is clothed in strength and dignity, symbolizing the righteousness and authority of the Church.

She prepares for the future, just as the Bride of Christ makes herself ready for His return.

Isn’t that amazing?!

A Godly Marriage Begins with a Godly Choice!

A godly marriage is the union of TWO people who are pursuing God’s design for their lives—rooted in wisdom, honor, and sacrificial love. Proverbs 31 is more than a description of a godly wife; it is a prophecy of God’s design for both men AND women, calling each to rise to the standard He has set.

So the real question isn’t just ā€œCan I be a Proverbs 31 woman?ā€ or ā€œCan I find a Proverbs 31 wife?ā€ The real question is: ā€œAm I becoming the person God has called me to be?ā€

That’s a question worth asking.

Say this Prayer With Me šŸ™šŸ¾:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the wisdom of Your Word. Help us to embrace the prophetic call of Proverbs 31 as a vision of who You want us to be. Strengthen the women reading this to grow in faith, wisdom, and courage and guide the men reading this to seek Your wisdom and lead with love and honor.

Transform us by Your Spirit to live out Your purpose and pursue relationships that reflect Your love. May we rise to the standard You have set, relying on Your strength alone.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
